CHINA

Baidu released two new AI models at very low prices

What’s going on: Baidu has recently released two new AI models. The releases include “Ernie 4.5”, the latest iteration of their foundational model that initially launched two years ago, and “Ernie X1”, a brand-new reasoning model. Both models are multi-modal which means they can process and understand text, images, videos, and audio.

What does it mean: While many American AI companies are struggling to keep the cost of the AI down, their Chinese rivals ship top-notch AI models every week and at ‘ridiculously‘ low prices. Ernie X1, which is claimed to be on par with DeepSeek-R1 in terms of performance, is released at only half the price of DeepSeek!

More details:

  • Ernie 4.5 outperforms GPT-4.5 in multiple benchmarks and it is 100 times cheaper.

  • According to Baidu, Ernie 4.5 has a “high EQ” which allows the model to understand memes and satire. The company has plans to release its next-generation model, Ernie 5, later this year.

  • For enterprise users and developers, Ernie 4.5 is now accessible via APIs on Baidu AI Cloud's MaaS platform Qianfan, while Ernie X1 is set to be available on the platform soon.

  • Baidu announced on a recent X post that the Ernie 4.5 series will be open-sourced from June 30th.

HEALTHCARE

AI is making many nurses uncomfortable

What’s going on: AI has influenced any field that you could ever imagine and nursing/healthcare is not an exception. Hippocratic AI, a controversial AI startup that builds generative-AI-powered agents to provide low-risk, non-diagnostic services directly to the patients, recently has raised the concerns of many nurses and other health professionals. They argue that overreliance on AI could undermine the holistic and hands-on approach that nurses bring to patient care. AI could potentially deskill nursing roles by fragmenting complex tasks into automated processes and also eventually hurt the patients in the long-run.

What does it mean: AI-driven clinical decision support systems, virtual nursing assistants, and predictive analytics platforms, are transforming nursing workflows by automating routine tasks like scheduling and documentation. These tools enable nurses to focus on more complex aspects of patient care, such as diagnosis and treatment planning. For instance, AI-powered systems can analyze patient data to provide real-time insights, improving efficiency and accuracy in patient care. Despite all of these positive aspects, many nurses believe the AI approach to healthcare has serious drawbacks.

More details:

  • Hospitals claim AI helps nurses work more efficiently, addressing burnout and understaffing issues.

  • Nursing unions, such as National Nurses United say that AI overrides nurses’ expertise and degrades patient care quality.

  • Xoltar is another AI company that builds avatars for conducting video calls with patients, as shown on their website.

🐋 China is imposing stricter government restrictions on DeepSeek, including travel limitations for some employees and screening of potential investors.

💎 Google will replace Google Assistant with Gemini on Android phones later this year and eventually phase out Assistant on most mobile devices, tablets, cars, and connected devices. Gemini will also power a new experience on home devices.

👨‍💻 Cursor, an AI-assisted coding editor, reportedly told a user to write his own code instead of relying on the tool. This happened after the user had spent an hour "vibe" coding with Cursor. He then reported the bug to the company. See how it went viral on Hacker News.

🎤 Amazon's Echo devices will send all voice recordings to the cloud starting March 28, as Amazon discontinues support for local processing due to the expansion of Alexa's generative AI features.

📷 Google's new image generation feature of Gemini 2.0 Flash is being used to remove watermarks from images, raising copyright concerns due to its ability to skillfully fill in gaps created by the watermark's deletion.

AI + Personal accountant

I want you to act as an accountant and come up with creative ways to manage finances. You'll need to consider budgeting, investment strategies and risk management when creating a financial plan for your client. In some cases, you may also need to provide advice on taxation laws and regulations in order to help them maximize their profits. My first suggestion request is “Create a financial plan for a home renovation business that focuses on cost savings and long-term investments".
