OpenAI is serious about reaching superintelligence

What’s going on: In a recent blog post on OpenAI’s website, Sam Altman wrote he believes OpenAI knows how to build artificial general intelligence as it has traditionally understood it and is beginning to turn its aim to “superintelligence.” He had previously stated that we are only a few thousand days away from superintelligence, and warned that its arrival would be more intense that people think.
What does it mean: Superintelligent tools have the potential to greatly speed up scientific discoveries and innovations far beyond our current abilities, which could significantly boost wealth and prosperity. Altman thinks, as the first step, AI agents will join the workforce and “materially change the output of companies” this year. However, there are many risks as well and the need for stronger safety measures and regulations is felt more than ever.
More details:
OpenAI has publicly stated that they don’t have a solution for steering or controlling a potentially superintelligent AI, and preventing it from behaving dangerously.
Many have criticized OpenAI for not taking AI safety seriously, specially when OpenAI disbanded teams focused on AI safety in May 2024.
MICROSOFT
Microsoft is investing billions of dollars on AI all around the world
Source: The Business Journals
What’s going on: Microsoft is on track to invest $80 billion in 2025 to build special data centers designed to handle artificial intelligence workloads. Microsoft considers advances and investments in world-leading American AI technology/infrastructure a necessity to reach what it calls “American technology success”. US is ready to lead in the upcoming wave of technology, particularly if it focuses on its strengths and forms effective international partnerships.
What does it mean: As the world moves towards the artificial general intelligence, many American companies worry that their international rivals (most importantly Chinese AI startups) might take the lead. Therefore, almost all of the major tech companies such as Google, Amazon, Meta and xAI alongside many private companies are investing heavily on AI. Microsoft and OpenAI were said to be in discussions in April about creating a data center that would house an AI supercomputer named Stargate. The estimated cost for this facility was over $100 billion.
More details:
Microsoft has a commitment to train 2.5 million Americans with AI skills.
Microsoft believes AI will disrupt the economy and displace some jobs but will also create new opportunities.
Last year, Microsoft announced that they intend to invest more than $35 billion in 14 countries within three years to build AI and cloud datacenter infrastructure.
Microsoft is partnering with a UAE’s sovereign AI company, G42, to bring AI infrastructure to Kenya. They are also working with Blackrock and MGX to create an international investment fund to add up to $100 billion of additional funding for AI infrastructure and the AI supply chain.
💰 Investments in generative AI reached new heights last year. Generative AI companies worldwide raised $56 billion from VCs in 2024 across 885 deals. It’s up 192% from 2023 when investors spent $29.1 billion.
📺 Samsung announced at CES 2025 that its TVs will now feature Live Translate, allowing users to translate closed captions of live broadcasts in real-time. Samsung is also adding AI-based voice removal with audio subtitles, for visually impaired people.
📉 OpenAI is currently losing money on its $200-per-month ChatGPT Pro plan because people are using it more than the company expected. Overall, OpenAI isn’t profitable, in spite of having raised $20 billion since 2015. They have lost $5 billion on revenue of $3.7 billion last year.
🤖 Apple is struggling with AI. The AI summary tool on Apple devices is making big false claims with news details that have been discovered by sources like BBC.
Meta deleted all of 28 AI influencers that it introduced in 2023 after backlash and racism accusations. The AI generated profiles could act like therapists and relationship coaches. They had the ability to reply to users with AI generated pictures and reply to messages in real time.
Alibaba’s AI-powered B2B search engine, Accio, has reached 500,000 enterprise users since its November 2024 launch. The platform catalogs millions of suppliers across 7,600 product categories and is trained on over 200 million trade industry parameters.
