What’s going on: OpenAI has launched its latest AI model, o3-mini. This new release marks a significant step in making advanced AI capabilities more accessible, coming at a time when OpenAI is facing stiff competition, particularly from Chinese AI startups like DeepSeek and Alibaba Qwen. The launch of o3-mini is seen as a strategic move to maintain OpenAI's position in the rapidly evolving AI industry. (Read this article for more technical details)

What does it mean: This model is designed to be both powerful and affordable and it is also better than o1-mini in general. It boasts enhancements in speed and accuracy, particularly in STEM fields like science, math, and coding. OpenAI claims that o3-mini is largely on par with the capabilities of the o1 family but runs faster and at a lower cost.

More details:

• There are 3 different levels of "reasoning effort" in the o3-mini family: low, medium, and high. o3-mini-high is the most capable model of all three.

• Free users of ChatGPT can now access this model by selecting the "Reason" option.

• Paid subscribers to ChatGPT Plus, Team, and Pro plans will benefit from higher rate limits or even unlimited access in the case of Pro subscribers.

• Developers can also access o3-mini via OpenAI's API, although initially, it won't support image analysis. The pricing for o3-mini is set at $0.55 per million cached input tokens and $4.40 per million output tokens.

What’s going on: MIT chemists have developed a generative AI tool called “ChromoGen“ to unlock the mysteries of the human genome's 3D structure. This breakthrough, detailed in a recent MIT News article, promises to revolutionize our understanding of how DNA folds within the nucleus, a process fundamental to gene regulation and disease.

What does it mean: ChromoGen can produce thousands of genome structure predictions in just minutes. Over the past 20 years, scientists have developed experimental techniques for determining chromatin structures. One widely used technique, known as Hi-C, works by linking together neighboring DNA strands in the cell’s nucleus. However, Hi-C and similar techniques are labor-intensive, and it can take about a week to generate data from one cell.

• The AI model employs a deep learning component that processes genomic and chromatin accessibility data, alongside a generative model trained on millions of chromatin conformations.

• This tool could potentially pave the way to advancements in drug design, disease treatment, and our overall comprehension of genomic architecture and gene expression.
