What’s going on: Klarna CEO is openly bragging about the company's use of AI to automate jobs, particularly in customer service. Klarna which is a Swedish fintech company known for its "buy now, pay later" services, has integrated AI across its operations, most notably with a chatbot that performs the equivalent work of 700 customer service agents. This has led to a notable reduction in the need for human customer service roles, with Klarna now requiring the work of about 3,500 agents instead of the previous 4,500 staffers.

What does it mean: This is a big deal because it shows we are already affected with AI in ways that we could have never imagined even 3 years ago. However, the Klarna CEO claims that this shift isn't directly linked to the layoffs Klarna conducted in 2022. Instead, the current AI implementation is about doing more with less, stopping new hires, and allowing natural attrition to decrease the workforce size.

What’s going on: The NHS is preparing to launch the world's largest trial of AI in detecting breast cancer, involving mammograms from at least 700,000 women across UK. This initiative comes when there is a national shortage of radiologists in England. Currently, the NHS uses a system where two radiologists review each mammogram to ensure accuracy in detecting cancer.

What does it mean: This trial is designed to evaluate whether AI can perform as effectively as a human radiologist. If proven successful, this could lead to a new protocol where 1 radiologist, supported by AI, reviews the scans. This could dramatically reduce the workload on radiologists, allowing them to focus on other medical tasks and potentially reduce waiting times for other diagnostic procedures like X-rays and MRIs.

• The trial has received an investment of £11 million from the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) and will be conducted at 30 different sites across the UK.

• In the trial setup, two-thirds of the participants will have their mammograms assessed by AI, while the control group will undergo the traditional double-read by human radiologists.
